When Jesus exposed the wrongs of the Pharisees, one of the lawyers stepped forward. “Then one of the lawyers answered and said to Him, ‘Teacher, by saying these things You reproach us also’” (Luke 11:45). He understood that the words of the Lord applied to them as well, but rather than asking what they had to correct, he protested that they had been insulted. A man who claimed to know the word well was defending himself before the Lord, who was preaching that word. If one worries about one’s position being damaged before weighing what is right and what is wrong, it is difficult to accept the opportunity to set one’s wrongs right even when it comes. This lawyer’s response shows that having learned much and having a heart that obeys the word are not necessarily the same.
