There is a difference between a servant who knows the fact that his master will return and a servant who waits so that he may open the door immediately to the master who is returning. The former servant also knows his master’s name and house, but if he is absorbed only in his own work, he will be flustered only when he hears the sound of knocking on the door. Jesus did not merely tell His disciples to know about the second coming. “You yourselves be like men who wait for their master, when he will return from the wedding, that when he comes and knocks they may open to him immediately” (Luke 12:36). At the center of waiting is not the time one has calculated but the master who will return. Because the servant wants to see his master and wants to welcome him, his heart is not stolen away by other things even while the master has not yet come.
