A Pharisee invited Jesus to a meal at his house. The Lord accepted that invitation and went in and sat down, but the eyes of the man who had invited Him rested on what the Lord did before the meal rather than on the word the Lord preached. “When the Pharisee saw it, he marveled that He had not first washed before dinner” (Luke 11:38). He thought it strange that Jesus did not wash His hands. The reason the text records this scene does not lie in teaching hygiene before meals. It is to reveal, through the word of the Lord, how the man who was judging another by visible actions regarded the state of his own heart.
