When Jesus was going through the cities and villages, teaching, someone asked whether those who are saved are few. If it is a way on which many people go together, it is easy to feel at ease, and if it is a way on which only a few people go, one comes to want to know the reason. But rather than telling them the number of people who would be saved, the Lord made clear what the people who hear the word must do. “Then one said to Him, ‘Lord, are there few who are saved?’ And He said to them, ‘Strive to enter through the narrow gate, for many, I say to you, will seek to enter and will not be able’” (Luke 13:23–24). He turned a question that counted the number of other people into an exhortation about the gate through which the hearers themselves must enter.
