If a friend comes to visit at midnight and there is no food to set out, we cannot show him hospitality with a glad heart alone. The man in the parable the Lord told went to another friend precisely because of that lack and asked him to lend him three loaves. He did not hide the fact that there was nothing in his house or turn his back on his guest; rather, he asked for help from the friend who had what he needed. Prayer, too, begins with knowing our lack. But since knowing our lack does not automatically make us pray, the Lord showed us the figure of a man who actually goes and asks.
