When clouds gather in the sky, people hurry the work they were doing and prepare to avoid the rain. When a hot wind blows, they think that the weather will soon become hot and change the way they live. Because they know that the signs revealed before their eyes are related to their own lives, they do not let even small changes pass by unnoticed. Jesus spoke to the multitudes by citing exactly this familiar kind of judgment. “Then He also said to the multitudes, ‘Whenever you see a cloud rising out of the west, immediately you say, “A shower is coming”; and so it is. And when you see the south wind blow, you say, “There will be hot weather”; and there is’” (Luke 12:54–55). Although they knew the coming weather by looking at the clouds and the wind, they did not make the proper judgment before Jesus, who had come to them.
