When we hear news of a person who has suffered a great misfortune, it is easy to think first about why that person went through such a thing. The fact that we ourselves did not suffer it becomes a reason to feel relieved, and before we know it, we may even consider that we, who survived, have lived more rightly. When the news that certain Galileans had been killed by Pilate was brought to Jesus, the Lord asked a question directed at the hearts of the people who had brought that news. “And Jesus answered and said to them, ‘Do you suppose that these Galileans were worse sinners than all other Galileans, because they suffered such things?’” (Luke 13:2). He was asking whether one can judge, from the fact that the harm was great, that that person’s sins were more than those of other people.
