The mere fact that the fig tree stood in the vineyard did not mean that the owner’s will had been accomplished. The owner did not come to check whether the tree was there, but came to obtain fruit. “He also spoke this parable: ‘A certain man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard, and he came seeking fruit on it and found none’” (Luke 13:6). There was a place where it had been planted, and there was time for it to grow, but the fruit the owner sought was not there. There was a difference between the fact that the tree occupied that place and the fact that it was producing what the owner wanted. Jesus told this parable after saying that unless they repented they would perish.
