When we believe in Jesus, we may expect that the people close to us will also rejoice with us and that all the affairs of our household will go smoothly. But when, after accepting the gospel of the remission of sins, we meet opposition from our families instead, our hearts are sometimes shaken as we wonder whether we have believed something wrongly. Because Jesus knew that His disciples would go through such things, He clearly stated the purpose for which He had come. “I came to send fire on the earth, and how I wish it were already kindled!” (Luke 12:49). The coming of the Lord was not something that satisfied everyone as people wished and kept their existing lives just as they were. The fire that the Lord sent on the earth is the very work of saving sinners. Because this salvation—in which He came clothed in a human body, had sin passed on to Him through the baptism He received from John, died on the Cross, and rose again—has been sent on the earth, it has become impossible to let things go by as if nothing had happened, leaving sin and unbelief just as they are.
